On Growing Up and Moving On (in the most petty way possible)

The following is largely a stream-of-consciousness discussion/ramble of an overly-introspective, arbitrarily-analytical human. If you're looking for a definitive point, there's not much to be had here, so read at your own risk. You've been warned.

Also, I wrote pretty much all of this back in October, so some of the details are a little wonky. I want to leave the "essay" untouched, so I'll just add in a little editing note when a detail needs to be updated.

-------------------------------------------

The other day, I found myself going about my usual life (I really don't even know what I was doing at the time), and out of the blue, I had a revelation so surprising that I ended up sitting in complete shock, contemplating the thought that had just crossed my mind. It probably shouldn't have been as ground-breaking and life-changing of a revelation as it was, and you'll probably laugh at me when you hear what it was, but it honestly gave me pause and really changed my perspective on a lot of things. Ready to hear it?

"I don't think McFly is my favorite band anymore... and they haven't been for a while."

I know. I know. Trust me, I know. It's the most inconsequential, petty thought-- not even a definitive statement-- and yet... I legitimately felt dizzy when I came to that realization.

I feel like a bit of backstory is necessary here, before continuing. I've touted McFly as my favorite band since my sophomore year of high school (8 years ago). That's the entirety of my adult existence, and a pretty significant portion of my teenage years as well. And I'm not one of those people who casually has a favorite band. McFly was my baby. I was that person who was annoying about their favorite band, to the point that my high school boyfriend refused to listen to them, even in my car, which was a very contentious point to 16-year-old Kristen. Even when I got to college, I was known as the McFly girl. All the people I hung out with in the common room knew how much I loved McFly, and there was even a guy who flat out hated me because of how obsessed I was with the band. (In hindsight, I'm sure I was annoyingly vocal about McFly but I still can't understand the overt hatred)

Furthermore, I've also long-touted Tom Fletcher as my #1 celebrity crush. He checks all the boxes of things I love. He's smart. He's a total geek- super into things like Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc. He's a total sweetheart with a healthy dose of sarcasm. Plus, he's a fantastic musician. He's got a beautiful voice, he's a great songwriter, and he plays a couple handfuls of instruments. When he proposed to his now-wife, I was devastated. When his wedding speech went viral, I gave everyone I knew a big "I told you so" as they said how adorable it was. I don't even like kids and I found myself extremely excited for him both times he and Giovanna had a kid.

So, I say all of this to say that this was not just a band to me. In many ways, it's been a huge part of my identity for the past 7 years. My go-to username on websites is literally KristenMcFly (I learned early on that the username was never already taken, and it's just so short and simple that I ran with it). Their faces are all over my bedroom wall at my parents' house, and are staring at me right now from the wall next to my bed in my own apartment. They've left a huge stamp on my life.

Back to the realization, which like I said, was pretty mind-blowing to me. It wasn't even an "oh that can't be true" type thing. I had the thought and immediately realized that I'd practically been lying to myself for quite a while, trying to convince myself that they're still my favorite band. It's been so long since my metaphorical "favorite band" baton has been passed that I didn't recognize the signs staring me in the face.

And the signs have been there. For a long time. I don't quite know how long, and I can't peg for you exactly when things started to change, but I'd say that it's been at least 2 years since I could legitimately consider McFly my favorite band. And what exactly are these telltale signs? I think the first was that I started considering 2 bands my "favorite band." For the longest time, All Time Low was a solid #2. And then, eventually, I started referring to All Time Low as "my favorite band" and considering the pair a tie. Looking back, even then I knew that I listened to, obsessed over, and fangirled over All Time Low much more than I did McFly. I just didn't want to admit it to myself.

Another sign that should've been blatantly obvious? I don't keep up with any of the members. At all. I follow them on social media, but anymore I find myself just scrolling past their posts. Including Tom. He has an entire YouTube channel, which I'm probably still subscribed to, and I don't think I've watched a single one of his videos since like... 2014. Even though he still technically checks all the boxes and is a total sweetheart... I'm not even sure I'd call him one of my celebrity crushes anymore at all. He's certainly still a person/musician I thoroughly respect, but he definitely doesn't tug at my heartstrings in the same way anymore.

And the most obvious sign? I legitimately can't remember the last time I listened to one of their songs. For a while, I've been fully aware that I really haven't been listening to them much. If you're not up-to-date, I've really gotten into KPop over the past 5ish months (note: now ~8/9 months), so pretty much all of my other music has been put on the back burner. But that's a conversation for another day. Either way, even before then, I usually didn't find myself really listening to McFly on a regular basis. I kept telling myself that I just wasn't in the mood for it, that I still loved it, and that if I were to turn it on again I'd still totally jam. And those are all probably true. But how long do I have to be "not in the mood" for a band before it's not considered a short-term thought anymore?

To be perfectly honest, I don't think McFly themselves have really done themselves any favors in this department either. Their last new full-CD release as McFly was in November 2010. AKA 7 years ago, not long after they became my favorite band. They released a Greatest Hits CD in 2012 and a CD as McBusted (McFly + Busted) in late 2014 (a very different sound from solo McFly), but no new studio album as McFly. They've been teasing McFly's 6th album for at least 3 or 4 years at this point, and I've pretty much given up that it'll happen. Most recently, they said they would be recording in January 2017. It's October now and I still haven't heard anything about it. Granted, I don't monitor their social media that closely, but I do still follow them so I would've seen something. But all that said, it doesn't change the fact that I'm still not listening to their older material either. Even when they released the McBusted CD, I didn't listen to that nearly as aggressively as I have with their other music. I'm not sure whether that can be chalked up to it being "McBusted" vs "McFly" but either way, the devotion still wasn't there.

So, I've reached the point where I feel like I have to admit that McFly isn't my favorite band anymore, and like I said, they haven't really been my favorite band for quite a while. But how exactly does this relate to growing up and moving on, as the title mentions? Allow me to enlighten you.

I tend to think of myself as pretty self aware, as I'm sure most of us do. I acknowledge the fact that I've changed a lot since high school, and I think I know myself pretty well as a person. I'm able to look back on the person I was in High School and (while I obviously can't recognize every single change) see so many ways in which I've changed-- I'm basically a totally different person than the 17 year old girl who walked across a stage and got handed her High School diploma. And yet, in the years since then, I've continued to stubbornly hold on to so many of the things I loved back then... just because? Essentially, I easily admit to my changes as a human, but I have difficulty recognizing and accepting my changes in taste, which just seems entirely backward. But here we are.

I'm this way with almost everything I love, though. I take a while to accept that a new show/movie I've watched is worthy of being an all-time favorite, and the same goes for everything else, from YouTubers I watch, to things I like to wear, and even to foods I eat. Seriously, as a kid I ordered chicken tenders at every American restaurant my family went to, and it took a solid 3 years of ordering burgers at every American restaurant I went to before I realized that burgers were my new favorite food. Seriously, I recognize changes in even my literal taste slowly.

I once read a psychological study (might've been pseudo-psychology. I can't remember if it was a legit study or just some silly article online) that said that for most people, the musical taste they develop in their teens will last for the rest of their life. So, I always assumed that my shift in musical taste from the music my parents liked to pop punk/alternative music at age 13 to be the definitive shift in my musical taste that would probably last my entire life. It sounds weirdly definitive, but it's always made some kind of twisted sense to me. So, yet another thing re-enforcing my difficulty accepting my change in taste.

So, once again, we're back to the thought that somehow it's easy (at least, for me) to accept that I've grown up in the past 5 years. I've matured and changed as a human. And yet I take forever to admit to myself that the things I love change right alongside me. I think a large part of it is simply that it's easy to pretend that changes in taste are temporary. I've been telling myself for a really long time that I'm just simply not in the mood for McFly right now, thus convincing myself that they're still #1 despite the fact that I can't even remember the last time I sat down and listened to one of their songs all the way through.

I think another important factor is that I tend to define myself by the things that I love more than by who I am as a person. This might seem weird to some, but I think it makes a lot of sense. Think about the people you follow on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc. Chances are, your personalities don't necessarily line up. But maybe you follow them because you have the same aesthetic, like the same books, or like the same music. Naturally, we group together with people with similar interests, so... it only makes sense to largely define yourself by what you like. It's like high school-- the goth kids aren't necessarily considered "weird" by popular kids because of their personalities, but because of the way they look an the music they're into.

Because of this, I could change significantly personality-wise and it'd have an incredibly small effect on my life in general, and yet some change in the things I like/dislike is enough to make huge waves.

Back to the topic of growing up and moving on, just as I've grown up and moved on from the person I was 7 years ago, I think it's finally time to admit to my change in likes and dislikes that has come alongside it. McFly... is not my favorite band. I'm honestly not even sure if I have a favorite band right now, given that I've recently gotten into KPop and have been listening to that almost exclusively instead of the music I listened to before getting into KPop. I'll keep All Time Low in that slot for the time being, but we'll see what happens (I now have a definitive favorite band. Scroll through my posts and it'll become obvious pretty quickly. *hint: it's definitely NOT Day6. Nope. Definitely not. Not at all.*). I still, of course, do still consider myself a McFly fan. Like I said, if I were to turn on their music right now, I would still really enjoy it. I just don't love them like I used to.

And for some sort of flimsy point to this rambly post? I guess my point is that if you truly want to know who you are as a person, you have to assess both your personality itself, as well as the things you truly love and care about. The personality is of course important to understanding who you are, but if you're like me and define yourself largely by the things you love, it's just as important to actually understand what those things are. But then again, I'm also just trying to make up some arbitrary point so that this post has some semblance of a purpose to it instead of just a stream-of-consciousness thought-dump of stuff that's been on my mind.

So, that's about all I had for this post. Like I said several times, I'm not really sure there's actually a point here, but it's something I've been thinking about quite a bit lately. Typically when I do one of these more thoughtful posts, I tend to try to at least have some sort of cohesive point, but I was fairly certain that wouldn't be happening with this one lol. Let me know if you'd like to see more of these rambly posts in the future. I can't guarantee that they'll happen, since it's kinda dictated by whatever random stuff pops up in my head, but I might end up sharing these thoughts more often. Who knows?

An Unhelpful Guide to Infinite!

Hey everyone. Bit of a random lil update post bc I started a new project that I wanted to share. So, I accidentally published a post this morning about the kpop group Infinite (it was supposed to go live next week, I accidentally set it up for LAST week. OOPS) and even though it was live for literally 2 seconds, some people had already clicked on it (y'all are fast!). So, since I've left a void where that Infinite post should be, I figured that I'd go ahead and share this video with you that I made, An Unhelpful Guide to Infinite! Just as with similar videos in this format, it's less of a guide than it is a compilation of all of the Infinite inside jokes, so I hope y'all enjoy! (although I guess it could help you learn a bit about them, idk)

It's the first video on the new KPop related YouTube channel that I decided to start, and I'm going to be making a lot more KPop and Infinite-centric videos soon (including one that goes alongside the one accidentally posted this morning), so check it out if you want to. I'd really appreciate it! :)

30 Day INFINITE Challenge

If you follow me on social media, you might have seen that over the past month I've been posting a lot of videos and gifs of the k-pop group Infinite. After seeing Sunggyu on The Genius, I eventually got curious and listened to their music and absolutely fell in love with them-- their music, their personalities, everything. And, since June 9th is the anniversary of their debut, I figured that this was the perfect time to do a 30 Day Infinite Challenge!

Day 1: Your favourite Infinite member and why.

I have a lot of trouble choosing just one favorite, but I got into the group after watching Sunggyu on The Genius, so he was definitely the one that I initially loved. Of the group, Sunggyu, Dongwoo, L, and Woohyun are definitely my favorites but I have a hard time choosing just one because I like them all for very different reasons... which I guess I'll explain once we get to that question.

Day 2: Your favourite Infinite song

I'm still in the process of getting through their entire discography, but the one that is my favorite by far is Bad. It's just such a jam and it has a very different vibe from a lot of their music. Not that I don't love their usual sound, but it just immediately jumped out at me when I started listening to their music and I also really love how equally the parts are spread out. Other standouts are Paradise, Back, Come Back Again (To-Ra-Wa), The Eye, Air, and obvs, The Chaser. I could probably list another 5 songs but I'll stop there.

Day 3: An Infinite song that reminds you of someone

OK, I really tried here, but I got nothing. Usually I can do this type of association really easily, but I'm struggling today.

Day 4: Your favourite Infinite cover

I mean... obviously:

Day 5: Best singer in Infinite

I mean, is this really up for debate? I'd say that Sunggyu and Woohyun are pretty equally tied for first place. I think that they both have really powerful voices and they're definitely the most consistently on-point members of the group. I really have trouble choosing between them, but if I had to choose, I might go with Woohyun even though Sunggyu is my fave. I think Woohyun's voice always sounds incredibly strong and really mature. Not as in old, but as in "I know what I'm doing and sound perfect." The same goes for Sunggyu, of course, but I think that Woohyun's timbre is more distinctive. IDK I just really like his voice.

Day 6: Best dancer in Infinite

I mean, this one's even more obvious. It's clearly Hoya. His nickname is literally "dance machine." Honestly, I attribute most of their famous "knife dancing" to Hoya (feat. Dongwoo), for a few reasons. Obviously, they can all dance well. Some of them (*cough*Sunggyu*cough*) can be a bit of a mess, but in general, they're all really good. But what makes them look even better is when you put the strongest dancer in the front. Sunggyu and L in the back might not be attacking the choreo at full-force, but if Hoya's in the front giving 110%, it's still going to look amazing. And he puts like 1000% effort into every performance. I often notice that he'll do these precise micro-movements that the rest of the group aren't quite doing. It's really phenomenal how much these little movements can affect the entire appearance of the group.

Day 7: An Infinite member you want to be BFFs with

See, this question's difficult because you have to figure out the line between members you'd want to date and the ones you'd want to be friends with. Or, of course, you could always have the will they/won't they friendship. It seems that this is a recurring sentiment, but I'm torn between Sunggyu, Dongwoo, and L, for several different reasons.

Usually, when I try to answer "who would I be BFFs with," I try to pick someone closest to my actual best friend, but none of them is really close to her. I guess the closest would be Dongwoo, but he's much more out-there and loud. Ugh, this is hard. I guess I'd have to go with Myungsoo because I feel like we have the most in common, but I'm pretty torn between all three of them.

Day 8: An Infinite member you want to go shopping with

This one's a no-brainer. Definitely L/Myungsoo. One of my favorite things about him is how much he loves wearing the color black. Most of his clothes are black, or plaid button-downs and that's essentially my wardrobe as well. If I don't know what I want to wear, I grab a black t-shirt and black jeans. Because of this, I typically end up wearing all black at least half the week. Just in general, I feel like our styles are pretty in-sync and the only problem we might have is arguing over who got to buy the black shirt.

Day 9: The member you think is most easily shipped

Probably Woohyun. He's just so presh, constantly throwing hearts at everyone and doing hilariously bad aegyo. But Dongwoo is also up there, if only for his constant butt-touching and how comfortable he is with being physically affectionate with everyone. IDK, I think all of them are pretty easily shipped with each other.

Day 10: Your favourite OTP

I kinda like the dynamic between L and Dongwoo, TBH. They're polar opposites in many ways. L is usually rather quiet and reserved, while Dongwoo is just unabashedly himself 24/7. I also love Woohyun and Sunggyu's dynamic together. Sunggyu can often be grumpy and serious, but when he's with Woohyun, he tends to be a bit more silly and goofy. I think the two of them, more than anyone, seem like they could actually be brothers.

Day 11: An OTP you don’t like

IDK, Hoya and Sungjong? Just because they're my least favorites? But IDK if that's even actually an OTP for anyone haha.

Day 12: Your favourite Infinite quote/interview
Ooh, this is a hard one. I'm not sure I could pick just one, although anything L says about loving black is pretty high up there. I'm also a big fan of Sunggyu's one english phrase: "I am not monkey, but I love banana." Plus nearly everything Dongwoo did in Ranking King. But my favorite interviews are definitely any time they're on Weekly Idol. I can't choose just one. They and the MCs are just so close at this point, and it's fun to watch them be really silly together.

Day 13: The member you think is funniest
Ooh, this one is a bit of a tossup between Dongwoo and Sungyeol. Dongwoo never fails to make me laugh, partially because his laugh is so contagious and partially because he's just such a silly, goofy person. But Sungyeol and all of his pranks and silliness also make me laugh. So, Dongwoo in terms of general silliness and unintentional giggles, but Sungyeol in terms of being purposefully a jokester.

Day 14: Your favourite variety show cut

I'll probably have to go with the clip of them performing girl group dances on Weekly Idol. I love all of their Random Play Dance clips, and definitely prefer a compilation of all of those, but in terms of just one segment, the girl group dancing has to take the cake. I've watched it countless times and it never gets old because every single one of them is memorable in some way. Sunggyu is just so horrible, but really proud of himself. Dongwoo is expectedly pretty perfect. Woohyun is legitimately the most adorable human on the planet, and L is a close second. Hoya executes Achoo (INFINITE version) to perfection. And then there's Sungyeol doing the entire choreo to Pick Me and making even L fangirl. It's just amazing from beginning to end.

Also, not sure if this counts as a variety show, but there are tons of clips from Ranking King that are just as good or better. The scene where they're driving the little cars is hilarious the entire way through, as is the clip where they can't figure out an answer to a question and Sunggyu just shouts " L L L L L L." There are just so many clips that I absolutely love of these guys.

Day 15: An Infinite member you’d kiss
Well if we're thinking in the realms of just kiss and not date or anything, then I guess I'm judging by who I find most attractive and who I think would be the best kisser, right? (Side note, I'm starting to wonder at what point I'm too old to keep doing this because I feel weird about talking about just kissing random celebrities) Anyway, I'm thinking I have to go with Woohyun here. IDK, of the 4 that I like the most, I think that he would be the best kisser. IDK, I just really want to stop using the word kisser because it feels weird.

Day 16: An Infinite member you’d play the ‘I Love You’ game with
So, I had to google this game, because I'd never heard of it. I was worried it was going to be really cringey, but it doesn't seem quite so bad. That being said, the obvious choice here is Dongwoo. That boy giggles at the drop of a hat, so it would be really easy to make him laugh.

Day 17: An Infinite member you’d date but in secret
I think the clear choice here for me is L. Between this question and the next one, I can only pick 2 to date and Myungsoo is an obvious choice for me, but he has the most fans who would be upset for him to be in a relationship. So he's the clear choice to date in secret between the two. That being said, I have several reasons for why he's my choice, so allow me to explain before anyone jumps down my throat for choosing "the hot one."

The thing about me is that I tend to like guys who are very much like me, and personality-wise, L is definitely the most similar to me. We both kinda have this cold, unemotional exterior that we prefer the world to see, despite the fact that we can both be softies. Plus, aside from the cold exterior, he's just generally one of the more quiet, reserved members. He's also really smart, which is a major plus for me. Also, as mentioned, I really like his personal style. He also has this hidden geeky side and likes to read manga, so that's definitely a bonus. Just all-around, a lot of his personality traits are ones that I really like, but he's definitely one that someone would have to date in secret because of all of the backlash from previous relationships.

Day 18: An Infinite member you’d date out in the open

Probably Dongwoo. He just seems like such a sweetheart. Like, I feel like he would keep me constantly laughing at his silliness, but he also just comes off as one of the nicest people ever. I saw a comment on YouTube that I'll insert here that made me laugh and also described Dongwoo pretty accurately:

He always comes off as really confident on-stage and sometimes when he's doing interviews as well, but internally he's just this little goofy, pure child who's cute and giggly. It's really adorable. Also, he may be really silly, but he's also clearly rather smart and (from everything I've seen) seems to be the best at English. Also, there was a video where he said something in Spanish and IDK if someone told him how to say the phrase, or if he knows a little Spanish, but knowing multiple languages is a definite plus for me. As for dating out in the open, I know that there was some brief controversy where he was seen out in public with a girlfriend, so he doesn't seem to care that much about being secretive with relationships.

However, I do want to briefly shoutout Sunggyu here, because despite how much I do really love Dongwoo, I have a feeling that IRL I would get along better with Sunggyu. I'm a pretty chill person, so it's definitely possible that Dongwoo's energy would be a bit too much at times, but Sunggyu and I could just be grumpy together haha.

Day 19: An Infinite member you’d bring home

So I'm going to interpret this question as bring home to your parents because I'm running a PG blog here! haha

And that would obvs be Woohyun. Referencing the picture I put on the last question, Woohyun is an unabashed cinnamon roll. Some of the other members could potentially get strong reactions from my family, but I feel like Woohyun is never going to rub someone the wrong way. Anyone's first impression would be that he seems sweet, and then he would just continue to prove that. I could easily see someone like Sunggyu, L, or Dongwoo causing my family to have a strong negative first impression (Sunggyu-- grumpy, L-- actually silent, Dongwoo-- over the top) but there's no way Woohyun would ruffle any feathers.

Day 20: An Infinite member you’d go clubbing with
OK, so clubbing is something that sounds absolutely miserable to me regardless of who I'm with. Definitely not my scene. But I guess if I had to choose one... Dongwoo? IDK he seems like he would be fun.

Day 21: Your favorite thing about Sunggyu

Quick note after finishing all of these "favorite thing" sections: I used them mostly to just talk about my opinion on each member, not strictly my "favorite thing." So I talk about both positives and negatives in each of these.

Despite the fact that I mentioned that he's one of my favorites, I haven't really mentioned Sunggyu very much in this post. So here's my chance to go on and on about how much I love him. Like I said, I first discovered Infinite by watching Sunggyu on The Genius. If you're an Infinite fan (and I'll assume you are if you've made it to this point in the post), I feel like S1 of The Genius is a must-watch. First, it's an amazing show. Legitimately, my favorite TV show of all time. Second, Sunggyu is so. much. fun. on it. I won't spoil you for anything that happens but he was one of my favorite aspects of that first season, and that's why I looked up Infinite's music.

In relation to that, Sunggyu is really smart, which is one of the things that I like most about him. Like I mentioned earlier, one of my favorite Sunggyu moments is when the entire group is being dumb while answering a trick question and Sunggyu starts just yelling the correct answer and complaining about how dumb they're all being. It's a hilarious moment, and it's 100% something that I would do. Sunggyu is definitely a bit of a know-it-all and I can definitely relate to him on that level. I also love how grumpy he can be as well. He's constantly teased on variety shows, and he does that really endearing "I'm mad at you but I'm actually not really that mad" thing that's really great.

Plus, he's a great leader and a great singer. And I love how disastrous of a dancer he is. Overall, I just really love Sunggyu and he's definitely one of my favorite members.

Day 22: Your favorite thing about Dongwoo

Once again, choosing just one thing is difficult, but I've talked about him quite a lot in this post already, so this shouldn't be too lengthy. As I've already said, I love his goofiness and his intelligence and the fact that he's a total sweetheart. He's definitely a really amazing rapper and dancer as well. I love the fact that he's so easily scared- it's really funny to watch, despite feeling kinda bad for him the entire time. But I think probably my favorite thing about him overall is just his good-hearted nature. You can tell that he's just genuinely a really sweet person who's really empathetic and has a really positive outlook on life. He's constantly smiling or laughing, or just being an extremely lighthearted, positive individual, and that's not incredibly common. Generally, when someone is extremely positive, it comes off as really fake to me. That's probably because I think of myself as a pessimistic realist (aka the reality of life is that a lot of it sucks), so consistent positivity just comes off as disingenuous to me. But not with Dongwoo. He just comes off as legitimately very positive and really sweet.

Day 23: Your favorite thing about Woohyun

First of all, shoutout to Woohyun's vocal cords because his voice is actually magical. He's a really consistently amazing singer, and the timbre of his voice is really distinct. I love it. Also, the aforementioned girl group dance video is one of my favorite moments of Woohyun ever. When he's just bouncing around doing silly aegyo, it's so adorable and I forget that he's actually an adult in his late twenties, rather than a barely-legal teenager. He has such a little baby face. And on that topic, his aegyo is probably one of my favorite things about him. Whether it's a total failure and he turns into NamGrandpa (another of my favorite clips), or he's bouncing around like an idiot (once again, another fave from Weekly Idol), or if he's just constantly throwing hearts, it's just adorable. That being said, he definitely goes way overboard, hence the NamGrease nickname. I cringe every single time he calls the fans his girlfriend. That being said, he's still presh.

Day 24: Your favorite thing about Hoya

As you might assume from the fact that I've barely mentioned him in this post so far, Hoya is one of my least favorite members. It's not that I dislike him-- I like all of the members-- it's just that the whole super-buff jock type isn't really my thing. Like, in almost every "try not to fangirl" challenge, the clip of him tearing his shirt open and doing a ton of hip-thrusting is there, and that's just not something that really gets to me. In fact, to me personally it comes off as a bit vain/arrogant. Not saying that Hoya is arrogant (he seems pretty shy and sweet), but that's just how it comes off to me in general. I say all of this to say that the very buff/jock side of him is something that, in general, isn't something I really like.

That being said, there are a lot of things about him that I do like about him, so let's move on to those. First of all, although I find "ideal type" descriptions kinda dumb because I think everyone has multiple "types," Hoya's ideal type is the one that I respect the most. His type is "someone I can respect. A girl full of ideas, who speaks fluent foreign languages." Most of the other guys gave some sort of physical description or something about her being cute, but Hoya clearly seems to care most about a girl's intellect and her mind and that just warms my little heart. On top of this, there's the obvious fact that he's the best dancer in the group. Seriously, he's so good and makes the rest of the group look great as well. Plus, he's also the hardest-working of the group, constantly working and practicing even when he doesn't need to, which is something that I really respect. Plus, as mentioned earlier, he comes off as pretty quiet and respectful. He's definitely the member who speaks the least in interviews, but I love when he shoots little zingers at Sunggyu. It's really funny. Actually, the more that I talk about him, the more that I realize that there are actually a lot of things that I like about him. IDK, like I said, I like all of the guys. I feel like I know the least about Hoya though.

Day 25: Your favorite thing about Sungyeol

His height!!! Just kidding lol. I think my favorite thing about Sungyeol is his playful personality. Like, he consistently makes everything really fun, whether it's because he's playing pranks on everyone, messing with the other members, or just generally being obnoxiously silly. I love the clips of him going throughout the dorm and showing all of the member's secrets, and the banana prank is just infamous at this point. Another of my favorite clips is the one where they're doing a challenge with weird glasses on and Sungyeol is basically just sabotaging the other members the entire time in order to win. And I also love his hilarious girl group dance as well. Overall, I just love that he's really silly and really goofy and tends to make everything funnier and just overall more fun.

Day 26: Your favorite thing about Myungsoo

Like with Dongwoo, I feel like I've said a lot about how much I love L, so I'll hit the highlights again before getting into more detail. Once again, he's the closest to me personality-wise. Cold on the outside, but hidden silliness/goofiness. He's smart, he's dorky, and he's the only member that loves the color black about as much as I do. Plus, when you do remove that cold exterior, he's just as silly and cuddly as the rest of them. I also love when he's just completely off in his own world. So often, whether it's in interviews, discussions with the members, or just life in general, you'll see L just staring off into space or doing something else entirely, not paying attention to whatever's going on around him. That's another thing I do a lot, especially when in a large group of people. I'm usually the quiet one, so I tend to get lost in thought or just forget about everything going on around me.

Another of L's funniest aspects is how much he just focuses in completely on food when it's in front of him. One of my favorite clips of L is when his teacher is posing as a waitress and he doesn't notice her because he's so zoned in on the food that she's bringing. And, I feel like I've said this about all of the guys, but he's just so sweet. In that same episode, when he did finally see his teacher, he quickly embraced her and felt incredibly guilty for not recognizing her that he actually started tearing up. I've gone on way too long about this, so I'll just go ahead and stop before I ramble for another few paragraphs.

Day 27: Your favorite thing about Sungjong

Once again, Sungjong is not one of my favorite members. Like with Hoya, I feel like he's the one I know the least about. Although he's not really as silent as L or Hoya in interviews, I feel like I just keep getting the same information from all of the shows. He's the maknae. He's the feminine one. He's good at girl dances. He beats up a teddy bear. He likes horror movies. He likes the color yellow. And... I think that's about it. I think the reason he falls really low on my list is that I think the other members are really charismatic, and unfortunately, he just isn't. Like with the rest, he seems sweet and likable, but just nowhere near as charismatic as the other members.

That being said, I do like the fact that he prefers to be really informal with the other members. I like that he'll occasionally joke around and refer to the older members casually rather than using "hyung." Maybe that's just because the idea of being formal with my literal roommates is just way too formal for my overly-informal, casual self, but that's just me.

Day 28: An Infinite member you’d want as a brother

My immediate instinct is to say Sunggyu, but Sungyeol or Dongwoo would also be fun. I guess I'll just go with Sunggyu though, since that's my initial instinct. He's just such an 'older brother' figure among the guys that I think I'd like having him as an older brother. I think that we'd get along pretty well, so that would be cool.

Day 29: Your perfect day with Infinite
I think the best way to hang out with Infinite is to do some sort of fun group activity. So maybe something like going to an amusement park as a group or something fun like that. It's always really fun when all of the members are just being silly and goofy and having fun.

Day 30: Your perfect date with your Infinite bias

Like I've said many times in this post, I have trouble choosing a favorite. So if we're going with my earlier assertion that L and Dongwoo are the ones I'd date, I'll talk about one for each.

So, I feel like the best date with L would be something low-key like going to a coffee shop. It'd be somewhere quiet to just sit and talk and get to know each other. Just something quiet and chill like that. It always seems like L gets especially quiet when there's food in front of him, or when he's in a large group of people, so I feel like a quiet, one-on-one setting like a coffee shop would be the perfect way to just sit down and have a conversation.

For Dongwoo, on the other hand, I'm thinking more along the lines of an amusement park. I think that would be a great way to have fun, but also have plenty of time to talk and spend time together. Dongwoo is such a little kid at heart, so I could see him loving the rides, but also having a ton of fun running around the park and playing the fun little arcade games as well. Plus, I feel like Dongwoo is in peak form when he's running around and giggly, and an amusement park is the perfect setting for that. Plus, amusement parks are just extremely fun in general. I love them.

So, that's it for the 30 Day Infinite Challenge! As you can tell, my love of Infinite is definitely consuming a lot of my time lately, but they're all just so hardworking and talented and lovable. Seriously, I'm constantly impressed with these guys and their music and performances. Let me know down in the comments if you're also an Inspirit and who your bias is!

Favorites of 2016

So... it's been a little while. I've been doing twenty million different things and none of them ended up being this blog. But, I've always done rankings of my favorite things each year, and I wanted to keep that trend alive. That being said, after evaluating all the things that I ranked last year, I found myself at a bit of an impasse.

Last year, I ranked my overall favorite movies, musicians, albums, songs, TV shows, YouTubers, and BookTubers as well as my favorite albums and songs of 2015. When I looked back, I realized that my overall/all-time favorites haven't changed much if at all, so it seemed a bit ridiculous to re-rank everything. As for the favorites of the year, I realized that in my iTunes library, I only have 3 CDs from 2016 in my iTunes. And while I liked them, it didn't feel like enough to merit a whole ranking. And then I had to consider the new songs of 2016 and I couldn't even think of any off the top of my head. So, I'm just combining the two into one post and adding other favorites of the year into the mix.

Favorite New TV Show of 2016:
Stranger Things

This may be the most obvious answer ever because everyone loved Stranger Things, but I got SO obsessed. It was so good and I watched the entirety of the show in a day. After watching the first episode, I got hooked and watched the entirety of the show without doing anything else in between. I watch a ton of reality shows and very few scripted shows but this one completely stole my heart and I ended up watching it another two times over the following weeks and months.

Despite the fact that there were new seasons of some of my favorite shows like Project Runway, Rupaul's Drag Race, and Big Brother, Stranger Things was the show that really grabbed me this year.

Favorite New CD of 2016:
A Pentatonix Christmas by Pentatonix

Like I said earlier in the post, there wasn't really very much competition for the best CD of the year, but as always, Pentatonix was incredibly impressive. I actually didn't jump on this immediately upon its release, because I don't really listen to a bunch of Christmas music. However, once I started listening to it, I couldn't stop. It was so good! The standouts for me are their cover of Kanye's song, Coldest Winter, their cover of Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays by NSYNC, and their version of Up on the Housetop. However, the entire CD is really great. And those three songs are also probably my favorite songs of the year.

The other two CDs that I have from this year were Panic! at the Disco's "Death of a Bachelor" CD and Parachute's "Wide Awake" CD. Both of them were good, but I definitely haven't had them on replay like with A Pentatonix Christmas.

Favorite New Song of 2016:
Bad 4 Us by Superfruit

I said above that the songs from A Pentatonix Christmas were probably my favorites of the year, which is mostly because I didn't listen to a ton of new music this year. But in terms of newly released songs, this is definitely my favorite. I played this constantly for a solid month after its release. I nearly forgot about it because it's Superfruit (Scott and Mitch from Pentatonix) on YouTube rather than one of my favorite bands or a song from a new CD this year. I love this song so much.

Favorite Pre-2016 TV Show:
The Genius

For the pre-2016 choices, I'm going with things that I discovered in 2016 that didn't come out in 2016.
This one squeaked in there riiiiight at the end of the year but oh boy did it make an impact. The Genius is a reality game show made in South Korea. I discovered it through listening to Rob Has a Podcast, and I checked out the first episode back in the summer. It was great, but I didn't watch past episode 1 until the last week of the year. Although I loved episode 1 the first time through, it resonated a lot more the second time I watched it and I ended up binge-watching the entirety of the season. I didn't finish the season until after the beginning of 2017, but I watched a good chunk of the season in 2016. This show is absolutely amazing and so smart. I can't wait to see the other three seasons, because I've gotten obsessed.

Favorite Pre-2016 CD:
The Walking In Between by Ben Rector
Technically, I didn't discover The Walking in Between in 2016. I listened to it quite a while back, but I just listened to it on Spotify and then forgot it existed. And then I re-discovered it in 2016 and actually downloaded and played it on repeat. This may not have been my most listened to CD of the year, but it was really high up there. And the songs on this CD all kinda count as my favorite pre-2016 songs.

The CD I listened to the most this year was probably Astoria by Marianas Trench, which came out in 2015. I first listened to it when it came out, but I severely underestimated it. I fell in love with it in 2016, to the point that I really wanted to put it here, but I did discover it in 2015 so I unfortunately couldn't. It did appear on my favorite CDs of 2015 list, which you can check out here.

Favorite Podcast I Discovered in 2016:
The Black Tapes

2016 was definitely the year of the podcast for me. I'd dabbled in podcasts before 2016, but only minimally (notably, listening to Rob Has a Podcast's Big Brother coverage). However, at the end of 2015 was when I first started listening to fictional podcasts and by the beginning of 2016, I went full force into the world of podcasts. The Black Tapes was the new discovery that I fell in love with the most. (However, I will say that I fell head over heels for Limetown with like 2 days left in 2015)

The Black Tapes is an incredibly creepy but engrossing podcast that is super unique and really interesting. It's not my absolute favorite podcast ever (that honor still goes to Rob Has a Podcast) but it's definitely the best one that I discovered in 2016.

So... that's all I have for my favorites of 2016. It's a bit of a hot mess of a list, but that describes my 2016 pretty well. This list has made me realize that I didn't listen to much new music this year, and I think that this is largely because of the vast amount of podcast listening that I've been doing on my commute to school/work.

If you're looking for my favorite books of 2016 (given that I make BookTube videos), I promise, it's coming! As with the last couple years, I'm going to be ranking every 2016 read on my blog, and I'm going to be doing end of the year videos on my YouTube channel as well. Patience, young Padawan.

Top 9 Favorite Songs

Hey, y'all! This is the fifth post in a 10-post series listing some of my favorite things. The first seven posts are lists of my current all-time favorites, while the last 3 posts include only favorites of 2015.

If you want to check out the other lists/posts in this series, you can check them out here:

This is the only list that is unranked. I've never attempted a favorite list for songs before because of how ridiculously impossible it is. Ranking bands or albums is a bit easier because there are less of them that you listen to on a daily basis, but there are so many songs that you know and love that it's hard to narrow it down at all. However, there are a few songs that are like the ULTIMATE faves, which I'll save for last. The rest of the songs are listed in alphabetical order.

Also, last thing before I jump into the list, this was originally going to be a top 10 list, but I just simply couldn't figure out what song to put in the 10th slot. Not that I didn't have a stack of about 20 songs lined up to consider- it's just that each of them was too this or too that, and none of them were ones I could make a definitive decision on. So in lieu of those slots, I have an honorable mentions list before jumping into the official top 9.

Honorable Mentions:
Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots (love it, but too recent)
Lane Boy by Twenty One Pilots (again, love it but too recent)
Thrift Shop by Macklemore (love it but can't quite commit. Not sure why)
Playing God by Paramore (again, love it but can't commit for some reason)

Black Mamba by The Academy Is...

This has been my favorite song by The Academy Is... for quite a while, and I've counted it among my favorite songs for quite a while, but it wasn't until I narrowed down this list that I realized how much I really love this song. It was written in response to some negative reviews of TAI's debut EP and is essentially saying "who cares, I didn't write this music for you" and I love that about it.

Here's To The Zeros by Marianas Trench

When I first heard this song, I liked it, but I didn't think it was anything special. But over the past year, it's grown on me like crazy. Right now, it's my ultimate jam song. Whenever I really want to just turn on a song and drive and sing along, this is the one that I go to. Is it super deep? Nah. But it's a great anthem and I love it.

Kiss Me Slowly by Parachute

Now, I'm not super sappy and don't really connect too much to the meaning behind the lyrics, but when the song begins to play and I hear those opening piano notes, my heart swells and I immediately fall in love with it all over again. I love the way that the music and lyrics sound together, but I don't necessarily care about the meaning behind the lyrics, if that makes sense. But don't allow that to downgrade my love of the song, because I do absolutely love it a lot.

Lies by McFly

This is super straight-forward. It's my favorite song by my favorite band. It's an awesome song, and I love everything about it. That's basically the long and short of it. It's great.

On My Way Home by Pentatonix

I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. It was a few days before PTX Vol. III was released, and I was trying to find leaked versions of the songs (I know, I'm awful, but I love PTX and I wanted to listen to it so badly and I'd already pre-ordered the EP so I didn't feel bad). And this was the one I came across. I started listening and was somewhere in between frozen enthrallment and heart-pumping excitement. I was obsessed. I fell completely in love with it. And I'm still in love with it. It's beautiful.

So Long Soldier by All Time Low

When I first listened to Don't Panic, this one was actually one of my least favorite songs on the album. And then I gave it some more chances and it grew on me. It quickly became my favorite song on the album, and one of my favorite songs of all time. It's got some awesome music combined with some awesome lines and I love it.

Ultimate Favorites
(Also in alphabetical order... I can't rank these)

Closer to the Edge by 30 Seconds to Mars

I've long called this one my second favorite song, but like I said, I really can't rank them at this point. I absolutely love the music and the lyrics and the way they combine into this beautiful, beautiful song, And I really like the music video too. This is another one that I just like to blast when driving.

In One Ear by Cage The Elephant

When I thought of making this list, this was the first song that came to mind. I wouldn't say that this is my favorite song, but it is definitely one of the ones that I think of the quickest when thinking of my favorite songs. I love the lyrics. A lot. The meaning behind them is super cool, and I love the pseudo rap style of it. And I love the big instrumental chunks as well. It's a really cool combo of sing-along-ability and more complex music.

Weightless by All Time Low

For the longest time, I called this my favorite song, but once again, I can no longer actually rank these. I love the music, and I love the lyrics, and I love the music video. It's another one that's great to blast and sing along to. I just really love it.

So, those are my top 9 favorite songs of all time. Let me know down in the comments what you think of the songs on this list, and what some of your all-time favorite songs are!

Top 10 Favorite Albums

Hey, y'all! This is the fourth post in a 10-post series listing some of my favorite things. The first seven posts are lists of my current all-time favorites, while the last 3 posts include only favorites of 2015.

If you want to check out the other lists/posts in this series, you can check them out here:

If this list looks familiar, it's probably because it is. Somehow, my list of my favorite albums didn't change over the past year, so I essentially copied and pasted my list from last year. I wish I had something to change here, but I really don't.

#10: The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance

I'm a big fan of concept albums, and this one is really great. Although there are a couple songs I'm not a huge fan of, the majority of them are really great, and overall it's just a really great and unique album.

#9: Hold on Tight by Hey Monday

Hey Monday's one and only full-length CD is most of the reason that I count it as one of my favorite bands-- they just barely missed out on my top 10. There are so many really great songs on this CD, and I just love Cassadee Pope's voice. I really wish the band had stayed together, because this is a really solid debut.

#8: Controversy Loves Company by The Audition

Another outstanding debut album! The Audition is another band with consistently good music, but this is the first and best of their CDs. Even my least favorite song on this CD is one of their better songs. This is just a really solid album, and I absolutely love it.

#7: Almost Here by The Academy Is...

Oh, look! Another awesome debut! There are a couple songs I don't love on here, but I still really enjoy them and love the CD overall. Some of The Academy Is..'s strongest songs are on this CD, and it's especially impressive because this CD was released when most of the band were under 20.

#6: American Idiot by Green Day

This one is kinda a given, right? It's a concept album, which is obviously a plus for me. It has some amazing songs on it, especially the full 10 minute long songs like Jesus of Suburbia. It has some of the strongest Green Day songs, and I could listen to it over and over and over and over. There's a reason why it's their most well-known album.

#5: Ever After by Marianas Trench

Hey, look! Another concept album! This CD is based around a fantasy story that Josh Ramsay wrote. It's one long seamless song, divided into several tracks. And it's fantastic. Just like with their first concept album, Masterpiece Theatre, the last song is a mashup that samples all of the previous songs on the album, and it's amazing. This CD is just too great.

#4: Losing Sleep by Parachute

Guess what? Another amazing debut! I love every single song on this CD. I used to fall asleep to this CD most nights (ironic, since it's called losing sleep) because it's just so chill. Parachute's whole vibe is just really awesome, and this CD is just the epitome of their vibe. It's so great.

#3: PTX, Vol. III by Pentatonix

This is the newest release on this list, as it was released only back in October. There are only 7 songs on this CD (technically EP, but whatever), but it's perfection. It's flawless. All of the songs are amazing, and there have been several times where I just listened to this EP over and over and over in one sitting and didn't get sick of it at all. Some of the songs on the EP are already among my top 25 most played. It's that good.

#2: Don't Panic by All Time Low

When this CD came out back in 2012, I don't think I stopped listening to it on repeat until halfway through 2013. This is one of the only albums I've ever listened to where I had to struggle to find a weak point. I'm usually really good at ranking songs from favorite to least favorite, but I found that impossible with this CD. It'll be a long-time fave for sure.

#1: Radio:ACTIVE by McFly

And, of course, my all-time favorite CD is by my all-time favorite band. This CD... it's just perfection. I've listened to it on repeat SO. MANY. TIMES. since its release in 2008, and I'm nowhere near tired of it. My list of favorite McFly songs is absolutely dominated by this CD. Up until I reset my iTunes, every single song on this CD was in my top 25 most played. That's 13/25. I love this CD.

So, those are my top 15 favorite TV shows of all time. Let me know down in the comments what you think of the shows on this list, and what some of your all-time favorite TV shows are!
